An allotropic form of phosphorus formed by heating ordinary p., in the absence of oxygen, to 500° F.; it occurs as an amorphous dark red mass or powder, non-poisonous, and much less inflammable than ordinary p.; it may be reconverted to the latter by heating to 850° F. in nitrogen gas.
