Acrid and stimulating, and possessing very little nutriment. Onions have been used as stimulants, diuretics, and anthelmintics. The boiled or roasted onion, as a cataplasm, is emollient and maturating. The fresh root is rubefacient. The expressed juice is sometimes used in otalgia and in rheumatism.
