A genus of the plant family Liliaceae (sometimes classified as Alliaceae) in the order Liliales. Many produce pungent, often bacteriostatic and physiologically active compounds and are used as food, condiment, and medicament, the latter in traditional medicine.

A native of Sicily, but cultivated for use. The bulbs or cloves, Ag'lithes, have a strong, offensive, and penetrating odour, and a sweetish, biting, and caustic taste. Internally, garlic is stimulant, diuretic, expectorant, emmenagogue (?), diaphoretic, and anthelmintic. Externally, it is rubefacient, maturative, and repellent; and& garlic ointment is made by digesting, at a moderate heat, for half an hour, two or three cloves of fresh garlic in an ounce of lard, and straining. It is applied as a rubefacient to the chest in croup. Dose, one to six cloves, swallowed whole of the juice. Taylors Remedy for Deafness, a nostrum, appears to consist of garlic, infused in oil of almonds, and coloured by alkanet root.

[Latin] A genus of plants of the Liliaceae. The bulb of A. sativum, or garlic (Bulbus alii the A., U. S.), contains a volatile oil (oil of garlic) consisting largely of allyl sulphide. A. is used as a stimulant, diuretic, and antispasmodic, especially in bronchitis and hydrophobia. Dose of a., 30 gr. (gm. 2.0); Syrupusallii, U.S., 3j (gm. 4.0). A. Porrum, the leek, A. Cepa, the onion, A. ascalonicum, the shallot, and A. Schoenoprasum, chives, are similar in action and use.
