A Russian novelist and soldier; born in St. Petersburg, Nov. 3, 1797 (not 1795); killed in battle in the Caucasus, July 19, 1837. Of his numerous novels the most celebrated are: "Ammalat-Beg"; "The Nadeshda Frigate"; "The Terrible Prophecy". His "Private Correspondence" is highly prized.
