-
A name given to the group of politicians who, from 1820 to 1854, managed the concerns of the Democratic party in New York State. Its power was founded on the system of nominating conventions and on the system of appointment to office as a reward for partisan services. Its chief members were Martin Van Buren, William L. Marcy, Silas Wright, Edwin Croswell, Benjamin F. Butler and John A. Dix. Its position at the State Capital gave it its name.
