A supposititious substance, produced by living organisms injected into animals, and liberated as an endotoxin by bacteriolysis. It is supposed to inhibit the action of the leukocytes preventing phagocytosis, and the bacteria thus become more aggressive. Virulent organisms thus produce their own antibodies as a defense to themselves. [Lat.]
