Syn.: complement. A substance described by Ehrlich, which resembles a ferment in its action and is present in normal serum. It is destroyed by 56 to 58 C., and when attached to such cells as bacteria or red blood corpuscles by the intermediary body or amboceptor it dissolves or destroys these substances by bacteriolysis or hemolysis.
