It is in irregular pieces, colourless, or of a pale yellow colour, hard, brittle, of a shining fracture, transparent, soluble in water, and insoluble in alcohol, s. g. 1.4317. It is mucilaginous; but is rarely used, except in pharmacy. Sometimes it is administered alone as a demulcent. Acacia Horrida and A. Giraffae, of South Africa, yield a good gum.
