An English traveler, son of Sir Francis; born in London, Jan. 24, 1826; died at Montevideo, Sept. 30, 1888. His chief writings are: Narrative of a Year's Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia" (2 vols., 1862-63); "Essays on Eastern Questions" (1872); "Herrmann Agha", a story (1872); "Dutch Guiana" (1876); "Ulysses: Scenes and Studies in Many Lands" (1887); a posthumous poem, "A Vision of Life: Semblance and Reality" (1891).
