An English author and linguist; born near Londonderry, Ire., in 1841. He was appointed student interpreter in Japan, 1864; interpreter and translator to legation at Yedo, 1870, and was successively assistant Japanese secretary at Yedo, acting consul at Hiogo, consul-general for Korea and Japanese secretary to Tokio. Retired on pension in 1889. Among his works are: "A Grammar of the Japanese Spoken Language", "A Grammar of the Japanese Written Language", "History of Japanese Literature", besides various papers for learned societies.
