(1819-1887), was a U.S. District Attorney in New York from 1845 to 1849. He represented New York in the U.S. Congress as a Republican from 1861 to 1863 and from 1867 to 1877. He was author of the compromise in settlement of the political disturbances in Louisiana in 1876. He was elected Vice-President of the United States in 1877 on the ticket with President Hayes and served till 1881.
