An Irish poet; born in 1633; died in London, Jan. 17, 1684 or 1685. He devoted himself to the production of literature, much of it in conjunction with Dryden; and produced among other works: "Essays on Translated Verse" (1684); a blank-verse paraphrase of Horace's "Ars Poetica" (1680); and a translation of "Dies Irae".
