(1835-1884), planned the capture of New Orleans in 1862. He commanded a division at Port Hudson and in the Lafourche campaign. He superintended the construction of defenses at Bermuda Hundred, James River and Deep Bottom. He commanded a corps at Fort Harrison in 1864, and was second in command at Fort Fisher. He commanded all the forces north of the Potomac after March, 1865.
