A British theologian, satirist, and poet; born in Gloucestershire or Herefordshire, about 1140; died about 1210. He was archdeacon of Oxford in 1197. He wrote: "De Nugis Curialium" (Courtiers' Triflings: 1182-92). Probably the Lancelot story in the Arthurian legends is based on an Anglo French poem by him; and the legends generally have been thought to be largely his work.
