The Vertical line at any place is the line drawn in the direction of the plumb-line at that place. Any plane containing vertical line is a Vertical plane. The angle of Vertical elevation of a point is the angle on a vertical plane between a line drawn from the point to the eye of the observer and the horizontal line. The Vertical limb of a surveying or astronomical instrument is a graduated arc, capable of adjustment into a vertical plane, on which angles of vertical elevations can be measured. A Vertical circle is a circle of the great sphere whose plane is vertical. The Prime Vertical is the vertical circle at right angles to the meridian, and therefore passing through the east and west points of the horizon.
