Vanillin, methylprotocatechuic aldehyde, a neutral principle, C3H8O3, obtained from vanilla and also prepared synthetically; it occurs in white needle-shaped crystals with the odor and taste of vanilla, soluble in 100 parts of water; employed chiefly as a flavor, but has been recommended as a remedy in atonic dyspepsia in doses of gr. 1/4-1 (0.015-0.06).
