(Astron.) An imaginary movement of the sphere of the fixed stars, in virtue of which it was supposed that the equinoctial points described circles of about 8 in radius about fixed points ; invented by an Arabian astronomer (Arzachel) to account for the apparent changes in the position of the stars, which he thought were not sufficiently accounted for by a uniform precession of the equinoctial points.
