a silver coin issued in 1873-1874 for use in China, in com petition with Spanish and Mexican dollars. It was not intended for circulation in the United States, though it was made a legal tender to the amount of five dollars at the time of its issue; this provision was repealed in 1876. Its actual value was less than that of the standard dollar.
