A Spanish poet and dramatist; born at Orotava, island of Teneriffe, 1750; died in Madrid, 1791. His chief works are an excellent didactic poem, "Music" (1780); and "Literary Fables" (1782), considered the best fables in the Spanish language. He also wrote the first regular comedies in Spanish, the best being "The Spoiled Child" and "The Ill-Bred Young Lady"; besides publishing Spanish translations of French plays and some of the Latin poets.
