An old tradition represents the existence of mankind as starting with a Golden Age, in which the earth yielded its fruits of its own accord, and pain and sickness were unknown. This was followed by the Silver Age, the men of which were punished for their impiety to the gods. After which came the Brazen and the Iron Ages, each worse than the preceding. Between these two last the Hesiodic theogony inserted the Heroic Age, or the age of the heroes who fought at Troy.
