born in 1819, of Worcester, Mass., founded the Emigrant Aid Company which settled Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan and Ossawatomie. These settlements in Kansas exerted a powerful influence for the anti-slavery cause. He represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress as a Republican from 1857 to 1861. He wrote "The Kansas Crusade."
