Sulphurous oxid, sulphurous anhydrid; a colorless gas, SO2, of suffocating and irritating odor, formed by the combustion of sulphur and by the action of certain metals on sulphuric acid. It may be condensed into a liquid and has also been obtained in the solid form. In the presence of moisture it acts as a powerful bleaching and disinfecting agent.
