(1819-1886), of Vermont, was an authority on the early colonial history of America. In 1845 he went from Vermont to England in search of Americana, and remained there until his death. He was agent of the British Museum for procuring books of all kinds regarding America, and assisted in forming libraries in America. He wrote " Bibliotheca Americana," " Notes on the Earliest Discoveries in America," and other such books.
