pseudonym of Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov. A Russian satirical writer; born in the government of Tver, Jan. 15, 1826; died in St. Petersburg, May 10, 1889. He is classed among the best satirical writers of his country. Among his best-known works are: "Satires in Prose" and "Innocent Tales". both published in 1863; "Diary of a Provincial"; "The People of Tashkend"; etc. Some of his works have been translated into English, French, and German.
