The renowned Athenian philosopher; born in Athens in 470 B. C.; died 399 B. C. He left no writings, and his philosophical method and his teaching are to be learned from the works of his disciples and contemporaries, especially Plato and Xenophon. In the "Dialogues" of Plato, or rather in the earlier dialogues, Socrates is believed to figure in word and in action as he lived, a sincere searcher for truth in all things.
