1. (O. Eng. Law) (a) The lord's power or privilege of holding a court in a
district, as in manor or lordship; jurisdiction of
causes, and the limits of that jurisdiction. (b) Liberty or privilege of tenants excused from customary
burdens.
2. An exclusive privilege formerly claimed by millers of
grinding all the corn used within the manor or township

Sock \Sock\, n. [OE. sock, AS. socc, fr. L. soccus a kind of
low-heeled, light shoe. Cf. Sucket.]
1. The shoe worn by actors of comedy in ancient Greece and
Rome, -- used as a symbol of comedy, or of the comic
drama, as distinguished from tragedy, which is symbolized
by the buskin.

2. A knit or woven covering for the foot and lower leg; a
stocking with a short leg.
