A distinguished American physician, poet, and novelist; born in Philadelphia, Feb. 15, 1829. He is noted as a specialist in toxicology, nervous disorders, etc., the results of his researches being embodied in a number of valuable medical works. He has achieved a high reputation by his purely literary books: "Hephzibah Guinness, and Other Stories" (1880); "In War Time" (1885), a novel; "Poems" (1882-87); "Characteristics" (1893); "Hugh Wynne" (1897); "Youth of Washington".
