In general, any cell which performs sensory functions; i.e., which is adapted to receive, transmit, or appreciate sensory impressions.

In particular, a modified epithelial cell in an organ of special sense, connected directly or indirectly by its central end with fibrils of the nerves of the sense organ. Such cells are named from their supposed function as olfactory cell, taste cell etc.
