Inflammation of the retina. Non-suppurative r. may be due to nephritis (R. albuminurica), syphilis, diabetes, lecucaemia (Splenic r.), pernicious anaemia, septicaemia, dazzling by sunlight (Solar r.), concussion, or be idiopathic. It is associated with marked impairment and perversion of vision (photopsia, metamorphopsia), and is characterized by oedema and plastic exudation into the retina, and often by retinal haemorrhages which may be profuse (R. haemorrhagica). According to the character of the exudate, r. is designated as Serous and Plastic; and according to the appearance presented by the inflammatory products, as R. guttata, R. punctate, R. striata, R. circinata, etc. R. proliferans, r. in which organization of haemorrhages leads to the formation of dense white masses often projecting into the vitreous. Suppurative r., due to pyaemic infection (Embolic r.) leads to panophthalmitis and destruction of the eye. Treatment of r.: removal of cause, bloodletting from mastoid, mercurial, potassium iodide. R. pigmentosa, a progressive sclerosis and atrophy of the retina, resembling cirrhosis of other organs; marked by progressive concentric contraction of the field of vision and hemeralopia, and ophthalmoscopically by deposition of stellate spots of pigment and disappearance of the retinal vessels. Treatment nugatory.
