The tops are used in making Spruce Beer. Essence of Spruce, Essentia Abietis, is a fluid extract, prepared by decoction from the twigs of this species of fir. From this is made Spruce Beer. This fir affords the Burgundy pitch and common frankincense. 1. This prepared concrete juice is of a close consistence, rather soft, of a reddish- brown colour, and not unpleasant smell. It is very adhesive to the skin; and, consequently, forms excellent plasters for remaining upon the part for some time; - as in cases of affections of the chest. 2. Abietis Resina (Ph. L. since 1809), Common Frankincense, Perrosin, Thus, Th. foemininum seu vulgare, Olilanum vulgare seu sylvestre, Resina abietis sicca, Resin of the Spruce Fir. It is solid, dry, brittle; externally, brownish-yellow; internally, whitish. Used in plasters like the last.
