A rebellion in the N. of England, 1536; headed by Aske, and caused chiefly by the dissolution of the smaller monasteries. So called because the insurgents bore banners displaying the five wounds of the Saviour. Scroop, Archbishop of York, who joined them, was executed in 1537.
