An Italian dramatist (1830-81); born at Rome. He was for some years professor of Italian literature. At first an unsuccessful dramatist, his "Nero" (1871) was received with the most enthusiastic approval for its dramatic power, despite certain marked technical defects of composition. His following plays confirmed the popular estimate of his greatness: "Messalina"; "Julian the Apostate"; and especially "Cleopatra". He wrote also a volume of "Lyric Poems".
