(1729-1795), born in England, was Proprietary Governor of Pennsylvania from 1763 to 1771 and from 1773 to 1775. He attempted to be neutral during the Revolution.

(1741-1788), represented North Carolina in the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1776 and from 1778 to 1780. He signed the Declaration of Independence. During the invasion of North Carolina by Lord Cornwallis he was placed at the head of public affairs in the State with almost dictatorial powers.
