[Gr.] At first a congregation of strangers (1 Pet. ii. 11) ; a bishop being set over the P. , and being correlative terms, while Dioescesis = a parish. But in the seventh or eighth century parish churches being frequently founded in villages, parochia (q.v.) came to mean the presbyters cure, and dioecesis, diocese.
