The pseudonym of P. J. Hetzel, a French publisher and author; born in Chartres, Jan. 15, 1814; died at Monte Carlo, March 17, 1886. Of Alsatian origin, he studied law in Germany when a youth, basing upon his experiences during this period his first literary successes: "The Life of a Student"; "The Story of a Snuffler"; and others. Among his popular works, most of which were published by himself, may be mentioned: "The Voyages and Discoveries of Mlle. Lili, and of her Cousin Lucien"; "The Devil at Paris"; "The Wit of Woman and the Woman of Wit".
