The scales, which fall from iron, when heated, consist of iron, combined with oxygen. They have been used like the chalybeates in general. The Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia has a Ferri oxidum nigrum, made by precipitating, by ammonia, a solution of the mixed sulphates of protoxide and sesquioxide of iron. An analogous preparation is in the Dublin Pharmacopoeia, under the name Ferri oxydum magneticum, Magnetic oxide of iron, Martial Ethiops.
