[L.] The points or lines of a vibrating body which remain at rest during the vibration, are its Nodal points and lines. In the case of a vibrating plate, these lines and points are shown by strewing sand on it before it is set in vibration ; during the motion the sand becomes heaped on the Nodal lines, and forms Nodal figures, or the figures of Chladni of Wittenberg (1756-1827), who was the first to investigate them.
