An American historical writer; born at Canton, Mass., 1804; died 1886. Postmaster of Boston, Mass. (1857-61). he introduced street letter-box collections. He wrote: "The Republic of the United States"; "History of Democracy" (1874); etc. He also wrote and edited works on phrenology.
