born in 1824, founded the banking house of Morton, Rose & Co. in 1869, which was the fiscal agent of the U.S. Government from 1873 to 1884. He represented New York in the U.S. Congress as a Republican from 1878 to 1881. He was Minister to France from 1881 to 1885 and was Vice-President of the United States from 1889 to 1893.
