A Polish novelist (1808-76). He entered the Turkish army in 1851, embraced Mohammedanism and rose to high rank (Pasha Sadyk); later he went back to the Ukraine and conformed to the Russo-Greek religion. He struck a new and original vein in fiction-writing. The force and fire of his characterizations are extraordinary. His greatest work is "Vernyhora", a historical novel of the year 1768, which has been translated into nearly all the languages of Europe. Hardly less celebrated is "The Hetman of the Ukraine".
