The great lyric poet of Roumania (1849-89); born at Bucharest. He was for a time editor of The Times, a strong Conservative journal, and the fierceness of political strife would seem to have spoilt his fine poetical genius. He died in a madhouse. His fame is built on his first volume of "Poems", notable alike for the depth and elevation of the thought and the melodiousness of the verse; they are mostly elegiosatiric, and touch questions political, social, religious, and moral. Some of his poems have been rendered into German by Carmen Sylva.
