(1768-1848), was Attorney-General of New Hampshire in 1802. He was a Federalist U.S. Senator from New Hampshire from 1813 to 1817. His reappointment as president of the Portsmouth branch of the U.S. Bank caused dissatisfaction in Jackson's administration, and led to the destruction of the U.S. Bank. He was one of the most vigorous, acute and powerful advocates America has produced.
