(1798-1871), Senator, was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1826 to 1832. He represented Virginia in the U.S. Congress as a Jackson Democrat from 1837 to 1839. He was a U.S. Senator from 1847 to 1861. He was author of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. He was appointed Confederate Commissioner to England in 1861, serving till 1865. (See art. "Trent Affair.")
