A famous Latin poet; born at Bilbilis, Spain, 40 (?) A. D.; died in Spain about 102 (?) He spent most of his life at Rome, where he enjoyed the favor of the emperors Titus and Domitian. His fame rests upon his "Epigrams", in fifteen books; they are witty and marked by great felicity of form and expression, but are often sensual and marred by flattery of the great. A late edition, with notes and indices by Friedlander (2 vols.), appeared at Leipzig in 1886.
