Ord. Zingiberaceae. The smaller galangal. Two kinds of galangal are mentioned in the pharmacopoeias; the greater, obtained from Koempferia galanga, and the smaller, from the root of Maranta galanga. The dried root is brought from China, in pieces from one to two inches in length, but scarcely half as thick; branched; full of knots and joints, with several circular rings, of a reddish brown colour, on the outside, and brownish within. It was formerly much used as a warm stomachic bitter, and generally ordered in bitter infusions.
