A name opprobriously applied by the revolutionary party in Massachusetts to those members of the council of the province who, in August, 1774, accepted appointment by writ of mandamus at the hands of Governor Gage. By the charter of 1691 councillors had been elected by the House of Representatives. The Massachusetts Charter Act of 1774, to punish Massachusetts, gave the Governor power to appoint them.
