A Scottish soldier, editor, journalist, and storywriter; born at Edinburgh, 1824. Entering the army (1839), he served with distinction in India; edited the Bombay Telegraph 1851-54; has been special correspondent for the London Daily News and Daily Telegraph, the New York Herald, etc. He has written: "The Bubbles of Finance" (1865); "The Profits of Panics" (1866); "Turf Frauds" (1875); "Three Months after Date, and Other Tales"; "Sir William's Speculations" (1886); etc.
