Portugal's greatest poet; born at Lisbon in 1524 or 1525; died June 10, 1580. He passed some time in India as a soldier; later he held a lucrative office at Macao; there he composed a part of "The Lusiads". He returned to Portugal beggared, and died at Lisbon in a public hospital. The "Lusiads" served to determine the ultimate literary forms of Portuguese: it is regarded as the national epic of Portugal.
