An American philologist and writer; born in Oneonta, N. Y., 1831; died there, Nov. 6, 1896. He was author of a "United States History", also of the popular "Franklin Series" of school-books; and edited a "Young Folks' Book of Poetry" and a "Hand-Book of Synonyms". The degree of LL. D. was conferred upon him by Hamilton College.
