[Gr.] These logarithms are adapted for calculating the fourth term of a proportion in which the terms are hours, minutes, and seconds, or degrees, minutes, and seconds; they are used to shorten the last step in the calculation of a longitude from an observed lunar distance. The term L. arithmetic is sometimes used to denote arithmetical operations performed on numbers sexagesimally divided; hence the name L. logarithms.
